Wall Drug, SD

Wall Drug is a sort of prerequisite of the road tripping world, and your first visit there validates you as a member of the road tripper club for life. For a few hundred miles as you approach the exit, you will see hundreds of billboards and signs for Wall Drug. The boys keep asking us what this place is we are stopping at, I like to leave them confused, so I just read each sign and let them figure it out.

One sign might brag about five cent coffee while the next brags of an 18 foot T-Rex they keep in a cage. Maybe the signs offering a giant Jackelope, a western museum, or underground mines will entice you. Whatever it is, families driving down this exact road have been stopping here for nearly 100 years.

Truth is, it’s a giant gift shop, I mean really giant. It’s dozens of rooms with interesting Knick knacks and art covering the walls. A few animatronics are fascinating but some are just creepy as hell.

I can’t stand shopping but I also know not to just drive past Wall Drug. We have been here several times, I’m glad to see the kids have fun but I need to get out of this crowded nonsense and get back to nature before I go mad.
