Happy Canada Day!

I looked it up, it said Canadians wear Red and dawn maple leafs and flags to celebrate Canada Day. Sure enough we are treated in the early morning by a group of kids decked out in red, waving their flags, and shouting Happy Canada Day. We do our best to fit in and I even bought a little Canadian flag to complete the disguise. Canada day celebrates the day when Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia decided to team up and become a single country.

There is little to no plan for today, a rarity thus far. Tomorrow we have to catch a ferry early so we just need to get across the island. It’s only a 1.5 hour drive so we have some options and we need to resupply. We could take the coast and enjoy a beach, we could check out the only major city on the island which we hear is cute, or we could just head straight to our campground and enjoy the activities and get some chores done. Amy discovers a farmers market on our route, so we decide to start there. This takes us to the city or Charolettetown where everyone is in good spirits for the holidays, the streets are filled with people wearing red. The farmers market will get us through another two days, all on local PEI produce and meat. Leaving the coast we see how important this area is agriculturally, there is endless farmland and the potato is a local mascot as much as the lobster and maple leaf. At the farmers market we learn about a fun pedestrian walkway filled with shops and restaurants. When we heard some cannons firing we asked a bookstore owner what was going on, he told us about the Canada Day festivals down at the water so we made our way over there and celebrated with our Canadian brethren.

After the festival, we continued on through farm land to a very quiet end of the Island where I surprised myself with an oceanfront spot. A short walk next door sat a very different kind of provincial park. We wandered over there and found a sort of storybook massive playground, structures based on Cinderella or the Three Little Pigs.  The kids participated in the Canada Day hayride then the campground opens a flippin’ candy store at the end so we have an appetizer of lollipops and popsicles before cooking some Hungarian sausage we picked up at the farmers market. Early to bed, I want to be at the ferry terminal by 7:15.

I love leaving open days like this just for situations like this. I would have missed out on the market, the festivities and seeing Charolettetown, all things I really enjoyed and will remember.
