I saw a debate online about the warmest beaches in Canada and a place called Port Hood was the clear winner with the statistics to back it up. Lucky for us, when I looked it up it’s right in our route in the perfect spot. Just a quick hour long ferry and a two hour drive will get us there before noon.
We have met some really friendly people along the way. Today when we stopped at a small market for resupply a gentleman crossed the street and took us to his garden and gave us fresh vegetables for dinner, he said he just likes to help travelers. What a cool person. The good problem to have was that actually the day before at the farmers market another man gave us some free veggies that we were planning to have tonight. It seems part of the culture to be very welcoming to travelers.
Although I am excited for the beach, this campground is for sure the one I am least excited for. It’s the only campground for miles with no competition. It sits immediately on the ocean and you can’t beat that convenience, however, we are about to pile in like sardines. Just a straight row of campers with a few feet on each side. Not a single tree to be found, shade is non existent. They have a strange uncommon electrical hook up that will leave us with no power tonight. On top of that, the weirdos here lock the bathrooms between 7pm and 8:30am and are never in the office. I can put up with it for one night but I have no clue how these people stay like this all summer.
We could not have asked for better beach weather and as it turns out we find a great community to spend the day with. The entire campground is grandmas relaxing in their trailers while the grandkids bike around and swim in the pool. During the best part of the day everyone walks down to the beach and cools off in the ocean. After a bit of that we went to the pool and swam with new friends.
My toes were so disappointed, water was cold! This was a scam! Our beaches leading to here were much warmer but I’d been waiting for the warmest water! No one else cares and everyone gets in. The grandmas explain the warm water is late this year. In the evening when we return from the pool unbeknownst to me, a kind neighbor had sort of organized the neighborhood to try and get our electricity on and friendly faces stop by with different adapters to try, until eventually word of our plight reached the far end of camp and someone had the perfect adapter. More cool people. I finally find a young woman working in the office, she has no problem leaving the bathrooms open for us all night. All of our problems solved.
On the beach, the kids open up their restaurant and you can tell Maple has been in Canada for awhile now because her policy has changed and she no longer takes our card as payment and leaves instead, bringing a machine to us to pay.
I stayed up after bed time and walked shore and met a fisherman about my age. We chatted for an hour and I feel he let me in on every fishing secret on the island. Life is good right now. I’m ready to return to the forest.
