Grafton Notch, Maine

Lots of people visit Maine for the incredible shoreline. We have been along one coast or another all summer and I am looking forward to heading inland towards the endless wild forests that the rest of us visit Maine for. We stopped at Screw Auger Falls, which we assumed would be a nice little hike and picnic lunch but turned out to be the local swimming hole. It’s times like these I love that we have everything with us at all times, within minutes, everyone who is not a wuss was splashing around in swim gear. We picnicked and checked out the falls before driving five minutes down the road to our campsite. As a pleasant surprise, our campsite was right along the same rocky stream we spent lunch playing in. I inflated the tubes and got out the sand toys and we spent the afternoon lounging around the edge of a meandering creek in Maine.

At night, Fitz and I escaped camp to lay on the rocks and stare at the stars. In the morning we would check out Moose Cave. We each took a chance and leaned over the edge to see how deep the cavern descended. Not hard to picture how the animal this place is named after got stuck in there. Now, less than a mile from the Appalachian Trail we decide to visit our home away from home. Although we only hiked for a mere mile along it, the AT calls to me like Moana’s ocean, I felt reinvigorated just being amongst the white blazes. Amy and I also realized this is the exact parking lot that we hiked to in 2016 when we had three months and tried to make it as far as possible. We made it to Maine and our friend picked us up right here and took us back to his place to wash up. Amy begins sharing so many great memories from the trail, reminding me of old friends and wild times. I realize they are essentially just one day on the trail and I can’t wait to get back on the AT. I was made for this place. Luckily for Lucky it’s only a few days away.
