Mountain Lake Camping Resort, New Hampshire

Walking right out of the bus and stepping directly in to a warm water lake in the mountains of New Hampshire. That is what I pictured for the next three nights when I planned this little surprise.

Most readers can probably tell that I prefer to keep moving and spending my time seeing as many different places as possible, I rarely plan to spend four days at a single spot. I hope you can also then understand how much I mean it when I say that after four days, I don’t want to leave! Gimme four more.

This resort is a campers dream. We treated it like summer camp. We spent most of the day in our swimsuits in or by the ridiculously warm lake. Once we checked out one of the paddle boats and the boys took us for a ride. We made it up to the pool and water slides one time. We went for ice cream after giant chess and had fresh baked muffins delivered for breakfast. Fitz was happy for the freedom that this place gave him and spent time playing football with the neighbors or fishing off the dock, a popular hang out for kids his age. The kids would build forts in and out of the bus and be entertained for hours. One night we visited the arcade and another we went to the craft shed and painted. What really stole the show was the late night show, the Perseid Meteor Shower, made all the more special because of our incredible campsite.

Of the approximately 8000 campsites at this resort, exactly one of them sits directly on the beach with access to the water. Getting these sites has become my specialty, most of the camp is made up of return visitors who have been coming here with their families for decades, many of whom let me know how lucky we are.  Of course, sitting here, it does remind me why I put in so much work so long in advance, this is the pay off right here. While other families pack up and bring their chairs and coolers down to the beach, we are merely existing here. When the rest of camp is at meal time or in bed, we have a private beach all to ourselves. At night, our campfire will reflect directly off the water three feet away while we eat our s’mores. Our yoga will be to the sound of frogs hopping from lilly pad to Lilly pad. The sunsets are unreal, the colors look so fake to me, as if someone had applied a filter in real life. Each night the filter changed so much. I would literally just stare at the bus in all its glory sitting there alongside the cats-tails and crackling fire.

A friendly neighbor with a friendly reminder, “don’t forget about the meteor shower tonight, I plan my trip around it each year.”

Perseids Meteor shower is actually an amazing event that occurs each year as we pass through the debris field left behind from a comet that swings by Earth every 133 years. Over thousands of years, as it breaks apart it has left a trail of rocks 10.5 billion miles around, when we fly through all of those rocks become meteorites flying 37 miles per second.

Within minutes of the sun setting, Amy and I both audibly gasped, “did you see that!” That first star streaked across the entire sky leaving a trail like it was tinkerbell. We immediately set down some blankets and everyone laid in a row staring at the sky as it came alive with fireballs lighting up the sky. We cuddled side by side until a few of us started falling asleep. One of the best memories I’ll take from the entire trip.

It’s getting hard to rank the best campsites of summer but this one has to be up there. I see why these people come back year after year and sign me up as well. Next time I am in The Whites, I will be stopping over here for a long rest.
